In a high-stakes trial unfolding in London, two young individuals are facing charges for their alleged involvement in hacking into prominent companies, including NVIDIA, Rockstar, and Uber. The defendants, 18-year-old Arion Courtay and an unnamed 17-year-old youth, stand accused of serious computer misuse, blackmail, and fraud. They are suspected of being affiliated with the hacker group known as Lapsus$.
Prosecutors assert that Arion Courtay and his co-conspirators orchestrated cyber intrusions into the systems of Revolut, Uber, and Rockstar Games in September of the previous year, while Courtay was already out on bail for unrelated charges. The charges against Courtay, along with unidentified members of Lapsus$, include the theft of commercial code and video content from the latest installment of the popular video game, Grand Theft Auto. Allegedly, Courtay assumed the guise of a contractor and spearheaded the attempted hack and subsequent blackmail for a reward.
However, Courtay has been declared medically unfit to stand trial, shifting the focus to the jury’s determination of his responsibility for the alleged crimes rather than a traditional guilty verdict. Consequently, he may avoid jail time if deemed responsible. The trial is expected to span eight weeks. Meanwhile, Courtay’s 17-year-old accomplice has already pleaded guilty to some of the charges leveled against them.
One particular count pertains to the joint hacking of NVIDIA. In February 2022, the two defendants gained unauthorized access to the accounts of two contractors, thereby obtaining confidential company data, including highly prized software secrets. Subsequently, the hackers absconded with nearly a terabyte of data from NVIDIA and publicly disclosed a portion of it. To exert pressure and advance their demands, they threatened to release the remaining data unless a ransom payment was made.
Prosecutors have asserted that law enforcement successfully linked the cyber intrusions to the defendants through various means, including IP addresses, emails, mobile devices, and Telegram accounts. Additionally, the defendants’ online boasts about their hacking exploits further contributed to the prosecution’s case. Although Courtay has been described as “highly competent and even brilliant,” his youthful inclinations allegedly led him to succumb to the temptation of bragging.
As the trial proceeds, the court will meticulously examine the presented evidence, encompassing the defendants’ digital footprints and their purported connection to the crimes in question.
