Google renames Bard to Gemini and launches its most powerful model yet, Ultra 1.0

Shortly after the launch of Gemini, Google’s ambitious language model, the tech giant is already making waves with its successor, Gemini 1.5. Today, Google is unveiling Gemini 1.5, targeting developers and enterprise users before a consumer-wide rollout. Positioned as a versatile business tool and personal assistant, Gemini aims to cover a broad spectrum of applications.

Gemini 1.5 Pro’s Powerhouse Performance:
Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google’s general-purpose model, matches the capabilities of Gemini Ultra and outperforms Gemini 1.0 Pro by an impressive 87% in tests. Utilizing the “Mixture of Experts” technique, the model processes specific requests with a portion of its overall power, ensuring faster response times and greater efficiency.

Expansive Context Window:
Gemini 1.5 boasts a colossal context window, capable of handling significantly larger queries – a staggering 1 million tokens, compared to 128,000 in GPT-4. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, emphasizes its potential, allowing users to query vast amounts of information at once, equivalent to 10 or 11 hours of video or tens of thousands of lines of code.

Business Applications and Breakthroughs:
Pichai sees the large contextual window as a game-changer for businesses, offering the ability to add personal context and information in real-time. Filmmakers can query reviews for an entire movie, and companies can sift through extensive financial records simultaneously, marking it as one of Google’s significant breakthroughs.

Limited Access for Now:
Initially, Gemini 1.5 will be exclusive to business users and developers through Google’s Vertex AI and AI Studio. The standard version, available to consumers, will be Gemini 1.5 Pro with a contextual window of 128,000 tokens, while the million-token version will come at an additional cost. Google is rigorously testing the model’s security and ethical boundaries, particularly concerning the expanded contextual window.

Race for AI Dominance:
As Google accelerates efforts in AI, other major players like OpenAI are not far behind. The competition to build the best artificial intelligence tool intensifies as companies worldwide formulate their AI strategies.

Gemini Advanced and Mobile App Integration:
Originally launched as Bard, Google’s AI-based chatbot is now rebranded as Gemini. It runs on the Pro 1.0 model in over 40 languages across more than 230 countries. Google introduces two new features – Gemini Advanced and a mobile app – to enhance user engagement with AI.

Gemini Advanced’s Enhanced Capabilities:
Gemini Advanced provides access to Google Ultra 1.0’s advanced AI model, excelling in complex tasks like coding, logical thinking, and collaboration on creative projects. It serves as a personal tutor, generating step-by-step instructions, sample tests, and fostering two-way discussions tailored to the user’s learning style.

Premium Pricing Plan and Mobile Experiences:
Gemini Advanced is part of the new Google One AI premium pricing plan, offering features of the existing Google One Premium plan and access to Gemini Advanced. Google is rolling out mobile experiences for Gemini and Gemini Advanced with new apps on Android and iOS. Users can access Gemini on-the-go, incorporating text, voice, and image inputs.

Global Availability and Pricing:
Gemini Advanced is currently available in over 150 countries and in English, with plans for additional language support. Google One AI offers a free trial for the first two months, followed by a monthly cost of $19.99. Gemini will gradually roll out on Android and iOS phones in the US, with international availability in English, Japanese, and Korean in the coming weeks.

In the ever-evolving landscape of AI, Google’s Gemini 1.5 and Gemini Advanced mark significant strides, setting the stage for a future where users seamlessly interact with AI experiences, oblivious to the underlying technical intricacies.
