Apple Unveils New iPad Pros with OLED Displays and Thinnest Design Ever

Apple’s “Let Loose” virtual event on May 7, 2024, brought an exciting announcement for tablet enthusiasts: the launch of new iPad Pro models with a sleek, thinner design and a major upgrade to OLED displays. This change marks a significant step forward for Apple’s flagship tablets, offering perfect blacks, vibrant colors, and greater contrast. For fans of the 11-inch size, the shift to OLED is particularly noteworthy, as it brings the smaller model in line with the display quality of its larger counterparts.

The new iPad Pros come in two sizes, 13-inch and 11-inch, and boast a sleek, ultra-thin profile. The 13-inch model measures just 5.1 millimeters in thickness, while the 11-inch comes in at 5.3 millimeters, making them the thinnest iPads ever. This redesign, combined with a new tandem OLED structure, allows the iPads to achieve 1,000 nits of peak full-screen brightness and 1,600 nits for HDR content, providing an immersive visual experience.

Base storage has been increased to 256GB, with the 11-inch model starting at $999 and the 13-inch at $1,299. Preorders are available now, with the iPads set to hit stores on May 15th. For those who prefer a matte display, Apple is offering a nano-texture glass coating as an option, providing more versatility for users.

Apple has also relocated the front-facing camera to the landscape position, addressing a long-standing complaint about awkward video call angles. The rear 12-megapixel camera has been upgraded with a new f/1.8 aperture, enhancing document scanning and low-light performance.

The new iPad Pros are powered by Apple’s latest M4 chip, boasting a 50 percent increase in speed over the M2. This new chip provides impressive performance while being significantly more power-efficient, thanks to advanced thermal management and efficiency improvements. The M4 represents Apple’s ongoing push to position the iPad Pro as a legitimate laptop replacement.

Accessories have also received a significant upgrade. The Magic Keyboard now features a more premium finish with an aluminum palm rest and a function key row. The Apple Pencil Pro has new squeeze gestures, Find My location tracking, and a gyroscope, enabling artists to create with more precision.

Overall, the switch to OLED is a welcome improvement, eliminating the blooming effect and ensuring a more consistent display experience across the iPad Pro range. This update is a clear signal that Apple is committed to keeping its tablets at the forefront of technology.
